From runway to closet
After last year’s UFO diminution, Yvonne of Yvonet has come up with another great action for the sewing community. This year it’s all about taking inspiration from international runways and turning them into wearable garments for the closet. Monika from Wollix and Stoffix will help her this year with the organization. Thank you to both for organizing such a great action!
At first, I had considered to not take part in the first round as I’m quite busy at the moment and could not think of a designer piece that I absolutely need in my closet right away. Inspired by the many ideas of the other participants, I started looking through the spring/summer 2017 trends for ideas. During this research, I came across the collection of Marissa Webb and instantly liked 3 of her pieces and would actually love to wear them right away. For those of you that don’t know this designer; Marissa Webb has been a designer at J.Crew for a long time and only recently started creating her own line. Since then I have noticed her modern but very wearable clothing on fashion blogs such as Wendy’s Lookbook and Atlantic-Pacific. As you can see, I have fallen for a gingham skirt with ruffles, a light pink trenchcoat and a biker jacket with peplum. The skirt contains 2 of 2017’s major trends through the ruffles and small gingham. I especially like the styling with a cool leather jacket, as it takes this skirt from summer to fall. For this piece I’m only lacking the right fabric but it shouldn’t be too big of a problem to find it with the wide offer of gingham fabrics. If you have looked at my Pinterest board for fashion inspiration for spring, you will have noticed the recurrence of light pink trenchcoat. I certainly need one asap in my closet! I like about Marissa Webb’s version that it is very loose and not too structured and stiff. For this project I need to find the perfect fabric and I’m also torn about which pattern to use.
It’s probably not very surprising for you that I finally decided for the biker jacket with double peplum, since I have already proven my love for biker jackets here, here, here and here. Decisive has also been that I already have the matching fabric in my stash. I plan on creating the pattern for this jacket myself. The basic shape should not be too much of problem, but the double ruffle will certainly need some experimenting to get the shape right. Unfortunately, I could not find a back view of this jacket and thus do not know how the ruffle looks in the back. Therefore, I will have to decide whether I want it to only reach the dividing seam as in the front or fill out the whole back. It might take some trial and error to come to this decision. What do you think?
